Out of Africa: Myrna Stroble celebrates her 98th birthday on safari
Myrna Stroble had one of those get-you-out-of-bed ideas. Instead of a cruise or a trip for a trip’s sake, she yearned for a more authentic experience, something a little on the wild side to celebrate her 98th birthday.
“I wanted to see animals in their natural habitat,” she recalled.
Myrna’s notion sparked a three-week adventure to Africa with her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Doug Niergarth. The journey spanned safaris, sightseeing and visits to South Africa, Victoria Falls and a sunrise hot-air balloon ride over the Serengeti in Kenya.
“We saw giraffes, water buffalo, elephants, leopards and hippos,” said Myrna, who was especially fond of the giraffes. “We were close enough we could pet them.”
A seasoned traveler whose suitcase is always packed, Myrna said her five children are always dreaming up her next adventure. She visited California and the set of the “Price is Right” for her 90th birthday. A client of Uhler Vertich White since 1988, Myrna and her late husband retired to Florida after selling their dairy farm. She has since returned to Michigan to live with Nancy and Doug.
“The investments keep her comfortable so she can enjoy herself,” explained Nancy. “We get her to do lots of things and make memories. I try to keep up with her.” Myrna’s “one day at a time” philosophy
has served her well, guiding 98 years of extraordinary experiences, from Michigan farmlands to African safaris.

Myrna Stroble is a client of Uhler Vertich White Advisors and is not being compensated for sharing their opinion and experience with our firm. Myrna’s comments may not be representative of any other person’s experience with the firm and other clients can experience different results.

Navigating the Big Beautiful Bill Act (BBBA)
At Uhler Vertich White Advisors, we have carefully reviewed the recently enacted Big Beautiful Bill Act to assess how its provisions may impact your financial plan. As part of our commitment to proactive service, we are updating our tax planning process to reflect these changes—always in collaboration with your tax preparer.
What Has Changed — and What Hasn’t
The most significant aspect of the BBBA is that many provisions of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act—originally set to expire in 2025—have now been made permanent. This means the substantial changes that would have taken place next year will no longer occur, preserving the current structure of the tax code for many filers.
The Social Security Department recently sent an e-mail to many taxpayers stating the BBBA will eliminate the taxes on Social Security for 90% of taxpayers. The bill does not, in fact, make any changes to the taxation of Social Security benefits. This has been a point of confusion that has led some of our clients to reach out to us with questions.
Key Tax Law Changes
1. Increased Standard Deduction for Taxpayers Age 65 and Older
One of the most notable provisions of the BBBA is a significant increase in the standard deduction for taxpayers over age 65:
• $6,000 additional deduction per qualifying taxpayer
• $12,000 total if both spouses are over 65 and filing jointly
This provision is effective beginning in tax year 2025 and continues through 2028, after which it is scheduled to sunset.
Income limits apply, and the deduction may begin to phase out at higher income levels. As part of our planning process, we will be monitoring this closely to help ensure you retain as much of the benefit as possible. Updated standard deduction amounts for 2025 (if full age 65 deduction applies):
• Single filer: $23,750
• Married filing jointly (one over 65): $39,500
• Married filing jointly (both over 65): $47,500
CONCLUSION: These higher deductions may reduce income taxes for many clients and eliminate the need to itemize deductions for more taxpayers, saving you time and money.
2. Charitable Deduction Changes
The BBBA introduces two major updates related to charitable contributions:
• Above-the-line deduction: Taxpayers taking the standard deduction may now deduct up to $1,000 per person ($2,000 for joint filers) in cash charitable donations. This is significant because, up until now, most taxpayers did not receive any tax savings from charitable gifts because they claimed the standard deduction.
• Itemized deduction adjustment: If you itemize, your charitable deduction is now reduced by 0.5% of your adjusted gross income (AGI). For example, with an AGI of $100,000, the deductible portion of your contributions is reduced by $500. For most taxpayers who itemize, this will not result in a significant increase in your taxes as it is a relatively small loss of a deduction.
NOTE: The $1,000/$2,000 above-the-line deduction is not reduced by income.
CONCLUSION: More taxpayers will see a reduction in their taxes from their charitable gifts.
3. Increase in the State and Local Tax (SALT) Deduction
The SALT deduction cap has been increased from $10,000 to $40,000 for taxpayers below certain income thresholds. This deduction includes:
• State income or sales tax (but not both)
• Local and state property taxes (including on primary and vacation homes)
This expanded cap primarily benefits those who continue to itemize deductions. Common itemized deductions include SALT, charitable contributions, and medical expenses. The additional $30,000 deduction does phase out at higher income levels.
CONCLUSION: Since most taxpayers do not itemize, this will only impact a few. For those it does, however, the tax savings can be significant.
What This Means for You
1. If you are age 65 or older and take the standard deduction, your tax liability may be lower beginning in 2025.
2. Even if you do not itemize, you may still receive a tax benefit from charitable giving.
3. If you do itemize, you may see additional tax savings from the increased SALT deduction.
While there are additional provisions in the BBBA, most apply to specific situations and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis during our planning meetings.
Our planning software has already been updated to reflect these new laws, and we will continue coordinating with your tax preparer to identify opportunities for tax savings wherever possible.
Please reach out if you have any questions or would like to discuss how these changes affect your specific plan.
Changes in tax laws or regulations may occur at any time and could substantially impact your situation. While familiar with the tax provisions of the issues presented herein, Raymond James Financial Advisors are not qualified to render advice on tax or legal matters.
